It is always a good idea to follow up your phone call with a letter and copies of documentation providing proof of your dispute, as well as any efforts made to resolve it. Send the letter through certified mail and request a receipt so you will have proof that the company received this letter. You may also with to follow up with another call after the letter has been received to see how the investigation is progressing.

Expect the process to take a little time. The company will get the merchants side of the story and investigate the matter thoroughly. If you do not hear from them within 90 days, contact them again.


Law states that a card company has 30 days to send you a written acknowledgement of your request. They also have 90 days or two billing periods to resolve the matter. If it is not resolved during this time period, know that by law, you will be held irresponsible for the disputed amount of money and cannot be forced to pay it.
